Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Concealed Carry & Home Defense Fundamentals class cover?
A 7-hour total class covering conflict avoidance, situational awareness, legal use of deadly force, handgun types and ammunition, Michigan firearm laws, safety and storage, concealed carry regulations, home defense basics, and gear selection. This satisfies Michigan's Part I requirement for concealed pistol license certification.
Does this class satisfy Michigan's CPL requirement?
Yes. The Concealed Carry & Home Defense Fundamentals class satisfies Michigan's Part I requirement for concealed pistol license certification. Part II (range training) is scheduled separately with the instructor.
Do I need any prior firearms experience?
No prior experience required. Our courses are designed for students of every level, from absolute beginners to experienced carriers. Our instructors meet you where you are.
What should I bring to class?
Specific class requirements (firearm, ammunition, eye and ear protection, holster, etc.) are provided when you enroll. If you do not own a firearm yet, contact us before the class so we can help you make appropriate arrangements.
Can I take fundamentals before deciding to get a CPL?
Absolutely. Many of our students take Introduction to Handgun, Defensive Shooting Fundamentals, or Firearms & Child Safety without ever pursuing a CPL. The training is valuable for anyone who owns or may own a firearm at home.
How old do I need to be to take a CPL class in Michigan?
Michigan requires applicants to be at least 21 years old to apply for a Concealed Pistol License. We can train students who are not yet 21 in firearm fundamentals; the formal CPL certification is reserved for those eligible to apply.
Where do I apply for my Michigan CPL after training?
After completing the required training, Michigan CPL applications are submitted to your county clerk along with your training certificate, fingerprints, and the applicable fees. Your county clerk's office can walk you through the local steps.
How long is a Michigan CPL valid?
A Michigan CPL is valid for 4 to 5 years from the date of issue (the renewal window is between your birth month four years out and your birth month five years out). Renewal applications can be submitted up to 6 months before expiration.
